Rules of Raid on Wuchao

Raid on Wuchao

Victory Conditions

The game lasts for a total of eight rounds.

Cao Cao's Faction (Cao Side)

  • Condition: Capture both of Yuan Shao's Granaries (H1 and H2). The Cao side wins in that round.

Yuan Shao's Faction (Yuan Side)

The Yuan side wins if they satisfy any one of the following conditions:

  1. Survival: Prevent the Cao side from capturing both granaries by the time the game ends (after eight rounds).

  2. Elimination: Completely destroy the unit "Cao Cao"(曹操). The Yuan side wins in that round.

  3. Cutoff: Occupy position (A1) with a Yuan unit, symbolizing cutting off the Cao side's retreat. The Yuan side wins in that round.

Tie-Breaker Rule

If both factions simultaneously meet their respective victory conditions during the victory determination phase, the Yuan side wins.

Turn Order (Sequence of Play)

  1. Cao Side: Units Movement

  2. Cao Side: Units Combat

  3. Yuan Side: Units Movement

  4. Yuan Side: Units Combat

  5. Victory Determination (Determine Winner)

  6. Start New Round (End in round 8)

Components

  • 1 Map

  • 16 Tokens

    • 4 Cao Side Units

    • 9 Yuan Side Units

    • 2 "Xu You" (許攸)Tokens

    • 1 Round Marker

  • Dice: Players must provide their own dice. A minimum of one 6-sided die (D6) is required, though playing with two dice offers the best experience.

Token

  • Color Coding:

    • Blue background represents the Cao side.

    • Orange background represents the Yuan side.

  • Unit Stats:

    • Left number: Attack Power

    • Middle number: Defense Power

    • Right number: Movement Points

  • Special Unit (Cao Cao):

    • Cao Cao’s Attack Power ranges from 1 to 6. Every time he attacks, roll a single die to determine his attack value for that combat.

Reduced States & Damage

  • Unit Reverse Side: Tokens with a blood splatter / white horizontal line represent the reverse (back) side of the unit.

  • Taking Damage:

    • When a full-strength unit takes 1 point of damage, flip the token from its front side to its reverse side.

    • If a unit takes damage while already on its reverse side, it is destroyed and must be removed from the game.

Movement

During your movement phase, all of your active units may move.

  • Movement Points: Each point of Movement represents one step. For example, a Cao unit with 3 Movement can move up to three steps per turn.

  • Flexibility: You do not have to use all available Movement points, but any remaining points cannot be saved and have no effect on later gameplay.

  • Exception: Please note that two specific Yuan units have a Movement of 2, which differs from the rest of their allied forces.

Stacking Limit

A maximum of five units may occupy the same space at any given time. At the end of the movement phase, check if any stacking limits are violated. If a space is overloaded, the excess units must move back one step along the path they just moved until the stacking requirement is met.

Terrain

Terrain does not affect movement costs. Moving from one space to an adjacent space constitutes one step, and each step consumes 1 Movement Point. Units cannot move through enemy-occupied spaces, but they may pass through friendly units.

Combat (Attacking)

When a unit enters a space occupied by enemies, it must stop immediately and cannot move further. During the combat phase, the entering side becomes the Attacker, and the units originally stationed in that space become the Defender. Attackers may launch a coordinated assault on a single space from multiple adjacent locations.

To resolve combat, the Attacker first adds up the total Attack Power of all participating units and then rolls a single die. The sum of the Attack Power plus the die result determines the Total Combat Power for the attack.

  • If the Total Attack Power is higher than the Defender's Defense Power, the Defender takes damage.

  • The amount of damage inflicted is equal to the difference between the Total Attack Power and the Defense Power.

  • Defense Calculation: The Defender's Defense Power does not accumulate. You only use the defense value of a single unit in that space.

  • Example: If the Cao side’s Total Attack Power is 10, and they are attacking a space with three Yuan units, even though all Yuan units have a Defense Power of 6, the defense value is still calculated simply as 6. Therefore, the Yuan (defending) player must decide how to allocate 4 points of damage among their units.

Damage Allocation & Retreats

Each point of damage is allocated by the Defender. The defending player may either flip a full-strength friendly unit to its reverse side, or remove an already-flipped unit from the game (signifying it has been destroyed). The Defender must allocate exactly the total amount of damage received—no more, no less. If the "Cao Cao" unit is destroyed, the Yuan player immediately satisfies one of their victory conditions.

  • Failed Assaults (Withdraw): If the Attacker fails to completely eliminate all defending units during a combat, the attacking forces must withdraw one step back along the path they used to enter the space. If this withdraw violates the stacking limit, they must withdraw an additional step.

  • Successful Assaults: If the Attacker eliminates all defending units, all participating attacking forces must remain in the newly captured space. They cannot move any further, even if they have remaining Movement points.

Control (Occupation)

The two Granaries (H1, H2) and Cao Cao's starting position (A1) can be captured to determine victory.

  • How to Control: A space is considered controlled if a unit either ends its movement there or was the last to pass through it. In both cases, there must be no enemy units present in that space.

  • Contested Spaces: A controlled space can change hands if the opposing side later stops in or passes through it with their own forces.

Special Rules

Xu You's Assistance

The Cao side may use each "Xu You" (許攸) token once per game.

  • How to Use: This ability can only be activated immediately after the Cao side rolls dice. It allows the player to reroll any or all of the dice.

  • Exhaustion: After use, flip the "Xu You" token over to indicate it has been spent.

  • Chain Rerolls: If the player is still unsatisfied with the new result, they may immediately spend the second "Xu You" token (if available) to reroll again.

Raid on Wuchao

If the Cao side is able to launch an attack on either one or both of the Yuan side's Granaries during the round 2, the raid is considered a great success. Regardless of whether the attack inflicts any damage, the Yuan side's Granaries lose their defensive utility for the remainder of the game. They will no longer provide the +2 defense bonus to the defender for the rest of the game.

Game Setup

  • Cao Faction: All 4 units must be placed at the starting location (A1).

  • Yuan Faction: All 9 units may be placed anywhere on the map, except for zone A to C.

  • Stacking: Setup must not violate the stacking limit (max 5 units per space).

  • Xu You Tokens: Place both "Xu You" tokens to the side of the Cao player’s area.

  • Orientation: All tokens must be placed with their front side facing up.

  • Turn Marker: Place the turn marker on the "Round 1" position.
