Raid on Wuchao
1. Introduction
Raid on Wuchao is a two-player historical
wargame simulating Cao Cao’s daring raid against Yuan Shao’s supply lines. The
game lasts eight rounds. Each player commands one faction: Cao Cao’s
forces or Yuan Shao’s army.
2. Victory Conditions
Cao Cao’s Faction (Blue)
- Victory Condition: Capture both of Yuan Shao’s
granaries (H1 and H2).
- Victory is determined during Victory Conditions Check in the round when the second granary is captured.
Yuan Shao’s Faction (Orange)
Yuan Shao wins if any one of the
following victory conditions occurs:
- Survival: Prevent Cao Cao from
capturing both granaries by the end of Round 8.
- Elimination: Destroy the special
unit Cao Cao.
- Cutoff: Occupy position A1,
symbolizing the severing of Cao Cao’s retreat.
Tie-Breaker
If both sides achieve victory conditions simultaneously during the Victory Conditions
Check, Yuan Shao wins.
3. Sequence of Play
Each round follows this order:
- Cao Side Movement
- Cao Side Combat
- Yuan Side Movement
- Yuan Side Combat
- Victory Conditions Check
- Advance Round Marker (end after
Round 8)
4. Components
- 1 Map (each space is a circle named
with an alpha-numeric on the map)
- 16 Tokens
- 4 Cao Side Units
- 9 Yuan Side Units
- 2 "Xu You" (許攸)Tokens
- 1 Round Marker
- Dice (at least one D6; two
recommended)
5. Unit Values
Each unit token shows three values:
- Attack Power (left number)
- Defense Power (middle number)
- Movement Points (right number)
Special Unit – Cao Cao:
- Attack Power is variable (*) : roll 1D6 each time Cao Cao
attacks to determine his Attack Power value
Reduced State & Damage
- Unit Reduced State: Unit with a blood splatter on the reverse side of the token is in a reduced state.
- Attack Power (left number)
Taking Damage:
When a full-strength unit takes 1 point of damage, flip the token from its front side to its reverse side.
If a unit takes damage while already on its reverse side, it is destroyed and must be removed from the game.
6. Movement
- Units may move up to their Movement Points each round.
- Each Movement Point can move the unit one space. For example, a
Cao unit with 3 Movement can move up to three spaces per round.
- You do not have to use all available Movement points, but any
remaining points cannot be saved.
- Movement is orthogonal/adjacent; terrain does not affect cost.
- Units cannot move through enemy-occupied spaces, but they may
pass through friendly units
- Two Yuan units have Movement of 2.
- Stacking Limit: maximum five units per space. Stacking Limit is checked at the end of each side’s movement in a round. Excess units must retreat one space towards their back at owner’s choice along the path they just moved.
7. Terrain
- Terrain does not affect movement costs.
- Granaries (H1, H2) and Strategic
Pass (D1): +2 Defense bonus to defenders.
- Raid on Wuchao Rule: If Cao Cao
attacks a granary or both in Round 2, the raid is considered a great
success. Both granaries permanently lose their +2 Defense bonus for
the rest of the game, regardless of combat outcome.
8. Combat
- Entering an enemy-occupied space halts movement; combat is
resolved immediately. The side which enters the space is called the
Attacker. The side stationed in the
space is called the Defender.
- Attacker: Sum Attack Power of all
participating units + roll 1D6 (Attack Power Total).
- Defender: Use the Defense Power
of a single defending unit (not cumulative).
- Damage: Difference between Attack Power
Total and Defense Power. Defender allocates damage among units (flip or
remove).
·
Damage Allocation &
Retreats:
Each point of damage is allocated by the Defender. To satisfy each point of damage, the defending player may either flip a full-strength friendly unit to its reverse side, or remove an already-flipped unit from the game (signifying it has been destroyed). The Defender must allocate exactly the total amount of damage received—no more, no less. The Attacker never suffers any Combat Damage.
Combat results:
- If Cao Cao is destroyed, Yuan Shao wins instantly.
- Failed Assault (Withdraw): If the
Attacker fails to completely eliminate all defending units, the Attacker must
withdraw one space back along the path of spaces they used to enter the
space. If this withdraw violates the stacking limit, they must withdraw an
additional space.
- Successful Assault: If all defending units are eliminated by the damage, attackers occupy the space and cannot move further that round.
Example: If the Cao side’s Attack Power Total is 10, and they are attacking a space (the Attacker) with three Yuan units (the Defender). Even though all Yuan side’s units have a Defense Power of 6 each, the Defense Power is still calculated simply as 6 (not 18). Therefore, the Yuan (defending) player must decide how to allocate 4 points of damage among their units.
9. Control of Spaces
- A space is controlled by a side if a unit of that side ends
movement there or passes through uncontested with any enemy unit.
- Control shifts immediately if the opposing side occupies or
passes through.
- Victory spaces: Granaries (H1, H2) and Cao Cao’s starting position
(A1). The control of victory spaces
determines victory conditions.
10. Special Rules
Xu You’s (許攸) Assistance
- Cao Cao’s faction may reroll dice using Xu You tokens.
- Each token may be used once per game.
- Tokens may be used in a chained manner (spend both for consecutive rerolls).
Raid on Wuchao
If the Cao side is able to launch an attack on either one or both of the Yuan side's Granaries during the round 2, the raid is considered a great success. Regardless of whether the attack inflicts any damage, the Yuan side's Granaries lose their defensive utility for the remainder of the game. They will no longer provide the +2 defense bonus to the defender for the rest of the game.
11. Setup
- Cao Side: Place all 4 units at A1.
- Yuan Side: Place 9 units anywhere
except zones A–C.
- Respect stacking limit (max 5 per space).
- Place Xu You tokens on the side near Cao Cao player.
- All tokens start front-side up.
- Place Round Marker( 回合) on Round 1.
- You may now begin to play according to 3. Sequence of Play.
